Joining The Lumiares as the sophomore property in hospitality group Bomporto Hotels' fledgling boutique collection, Lisbon's Vintage Hotel & Spa has just emerged from a top-to-toe makeover, courtesy of local outfit, Quiet Studios, together with creative consultants, Foster & Bloom.
Taking its cues from the property's namesake, the designers have created an updated vintage aesthetic, dressing the clean, curved and modernist lines of the building with a mix of original mid-century furnishings and bespoke specially commissioned reproductions, while flying the flag for all things Portuguese.
In the 56 guestrooms, for example, chairs by Danish designers Kai Kristiansen, Poul Cadovius or Erik Buch, sit alongside offerings from long-established Portuguese brands such as crockery by Costa Nova; pencils from Viarco; Claus Porto bathroom amenities; retro toothpaste from Couto; and a stand out vintage bar trolley stocked with goodies curated by Foster & Bloom, as well as gin from local brand Sharish.
Plump for one of the top floor suites for impressive Lisbon views, or head to the V Rooftop Bar to sip on cocktails, like the Jungle Bird, against the city's skyline; also the ideal spot for a pre-dinner tipple, before heading to in-house restaurant, Blue. Here, chef João Silva churns out modern Portuguese dishes, like the crispy black swordfish with baked organic carrot puree and spinach, in a setting inspired by the Algarve coast in the 1950s.
Elsewhere, a bold portrait of a Portuguese Fadista (a female fado singer), by artist Margarida Fleming, takes pride of place behind the bar, and a glittering brass and silver Alexander Calder-inspired mobile by German studio Lappalainen hangs in the lobby. The subterranean spa, meanwhile, which features a glass sculpture by Lisbon artist Branca Cuvier, is the best spot to relax, after a day spent pounding the nearby Avenida da Liberdade.
